Day 17 - Carlton-Bordon (PEI) to Charlottetown

Because we only had 60 to do today we had a lazy start laying in bed drinking tea (Thanks Marge). We breakfasted in the cabin on muesli, packed and finally got started about 9:30.

We chose not to use the Rails to Trails because of the rain and our experience with the Petit Temis. Instead we devised a hybrid route starting on the Trans Canada and heading north east along the 1A, 225, 13 up to Hunter River then east on the 2. All I can say is PEI ain’t flat and we were reduced to the granny gear a couple of times. I counted 13 major downs and ups before we got to Hunter River in pouring rain, to have a snack at the Irving station, then, we had the best part of a kilometer on compact dirt through the road works on a 7% hill.

The rain just kept increasing and by the time we got to the outskirts of Charlottetown, roads were flooded and traffic tied up. We found the hostel by mistake and after dripping all over their new wooden floors, we got organized, showered and dried. We then went out for our tour of the capital. We weren’t too adventurous as the rain had only let up a little, but we did refuel in fine form at the Olde Dublin Pub. Tonight is the Cup Final everyone is running around making pies and other treats for the big game tonight when a local boy will be playing. We probably won’t last that long. Tomorrow it’s 50km to Woods Island Ferry and 2 days furlough with Joan and Eddy.

  1. It's 7:30 am (yes am) and Mike and I are just back home after having breakfst with Dave and Sandra! "What?" you might ask. Well Dave's mate invited him and 2 friends to go and watch the shuttle take off with a crowd at the space centre. Julie Payette will be on it so there was a party. Having woken at 5:30am, picked up at 5:50am we arrived at the gate to be told the launch was postponed! Should we return to our beds to prepare for tonight's festivities at Susie and Marks? Not us, we were awake but desperately in need of a caffeine fix. Would Exquis be open? Hooray it was! In we trooped, another early breakfst with friends. As we ate we thought how late in the day it was when we shared breakfast there with the 2 of you, plus friends. Now it's a quick relax with the paper before getting on with our Saturday, which will include an afternoon nap!
    Safe pedalling!

  2. Hi Annie, Thanks for the news, I can tell already that Davey is having fun and not letting the grass grow. (Knock knock) We hope the breakfast was at least as good as last time. Hopefully an easy day today, but we shall see. We are ready for a couple of days off.ronandmargexx

  3. Hi Ron & Marge, You got a bit unfortunate with the weather in PEI but you should be o.k. after Sunday they are forecasting nothing but sunshine, for the next 4 or 5 days.
The great game ended with a satisfactory result in our household, as Andrew has been a Penguins fan since he first started taking an interest.
Thanks for not taking pictures of the junk, I get all sentimental when I see all these old appliances at the end of their lives and I think of the wonderful meals they've cooked or the clothes they've washed for all those families, I get all teary eyed!
    Happy Trails.
    Alwyn.

  4. Fresh from my french toast, mountain of fruit and a few coffees it was great to read of your safe arrival in Charlottetown.
Has Marge taken you via Green Gables yet?
Heard from Tim this am full of anecdotes about your peregrinations through NB. Also checked the house, played the piano and saw Andrew washing and waxing his car!!
We have warmer weather at last. I hope it catches you guys at Joan and Eddie's. Love to all. FQTA awards this evening in Montmagny, will keep you posted.
We met Rene in Eggsquis and learned that their drama "Regard dans le miroir" had recently won him a best actor award at a festival.
Stop blogging after lights out Ron Momma Bear needs her sleep.

  5. Hi Folks...this is Sam from the Olde Dublin Pub in Charlottetown. Just visiting your site, you have had quite the journey! It was great meeting you and really nice to hear about your voyage. Hope the rest of it goes well and that you don't run into anymore of that red mud like here on PEI. Take care,
    Sam

  6. Dear Ron and Marg,
Great to meet you. I was thinking that Bonanza Pass was going to be tough for you but once you were over it, there is little else to match it in the rest of Canada! I had a great ride to the summit. Enjoy the rest of your time in the Kootenays. Marg you would like Ainsworth Hot springs, not far from the Balfour Ferry.
    Kind Regards
    Iain Reid
