Day 13 - Tracadie-Sheila to Baie St Anne

I stayed up last night to enter the blog for the last two days, so got to bed really late, just before 10pm. The connection was slow so uploading photos was a real pain, and I guess I will have to get more selective. So after that slight whine……. We started out after a great search for the room key which had gone missing. It apparently turned up at the desk Phew!

We made good time on the road with a very cool cross wind to Neguac (35km) where we stopped for a snack at Tim H’s; then on to Miramichi and its famous bridge.

This part of the ride was unremarkable, and I said to Marge how much the terrain resembled where we had travelled for the last 10 days. Once again the cross wind built during the morning and it became a tough ride. We arrived in Miramachi about 13:30h and decided on lunch at Subway before attacking the bridge. Fully refueled we set out onto the concrete pathway on the side of the carriage way. Truly an interesting experience and one that should not be attempted sober.

The side rail is a foot below shoulder height and the 4 foot wide pathway is a foot above the road. This does not leave too much wobble room. At the apex of the bridge Tim stopped to take pictures, and of course we had to stop too, only our start was still somewhat up hill. Have you ever tried to start a fully laden tandem uphill, towing a trailer, with only what amounts to 2 ft of wobble room? Needless to say I did use invective against my friend for the first time this vacation.

All went ok until about 100 m from the end when there was a concrete barrier across the path because the side rail had been damaged. We waited for the traffic to abate before attempting to get the tandem down the foot high kerb, and one car stopped and guarded us as we made the maneuver. Thanks very much to that man.

We turned the corner and now had the strong westerly wind behind us, magic…… It was such good riding that we extended the trip about 20 km to make tomorrow easier. We chose Baie St Anne Camp site from several available, only to find it was 4km from a restaurant. Nothing lost we had an eating up session and we had bought emergency provisions of Yellow Tail Merlot.

Mosquitoes were a bit bothersome, so some of the party disappeared into their tent by 19:30h not to be seen again today. Hardier members suffered and typed the Blog. Love to all our readers, to Live Wire thanks for the constructive Comment, the stoker is truly chastened and will, in future take photos of her “observations.” Oh, by the way, that Motel room key? The lost one turned up in Margie’s pants pocket at Baie St Anne.
