Day 11 - Campbellton to Nigadoo

Once upon a time there were 4 cyclists, there was little Mummy Cyclist…….

Down to Tim H’s for breakfast and a chat with the locals, then in a stiff breeze and sunshine as we headed eastward. The ride to Dalhousie was pleasant enough, but the town itself is not awe inspiring. (I’m not sure exactly sure what we expected. to be honest,)

We were set up for a 3km peregrination by Tim’s question to a local Goth along the lines of, “Can we get to the 134 if we go straight on here?” Said passer bye truthfully answered that we could.

At 40km we rode across the Eel River Bar which had fresh water on one side and salty on the other. We stopped at the famous Moulin Café where we ate homemade tart and had some good coffee and a laugh with our server, Edie who promised to follow our blog. A short time after we came upon a young man pulling a supermarket trolley along the road loaded with recyclable tins and bottles. He said he had 113 bags to be brought up from New Mills which, at that time, was 12km down the street.

The wind increased with the day and became more of a hindrance. The terrain was also seriously rolling, ie low gear pedaling was required to breast the top of the next rise.

The wind and the terrain combined were tiring and we stopped for ice cream at 60km after one particularly nasty little rise. I asked somewhat jocularly for tomato flavoured ice cream and the lady said that if that was what I wanted really –No problem. I quickly re-opted for fresh strawberry.

The next section of road was dominated by the odors emanating from three industrial plants, a sawmill, actually a rather pleasant pine smell, Belledune Generating plant which filled the air with sulphur dioxide, and lastly a Zinc casting plant which gave out chemical smells which were both malodorous and very concentrated.

At last we arrived at Nigadoo and found a Campsite and settled down for the night prior to a meal at the local Greek/Canadian Restaurant. We just got home in time to get into our tents before the heavens opened with a thunder storm. Poor Margie and Dot got marooned in the toilet and had to make a run for it.

The campsite calmed down when the sun went down and all that was to be heard was the sound of the CN trains blowing their horns as they crossed roads in Nigadoo. Bye Byes at 8:30 pm.

  1. Where shall we send the gas masks in case of further foul odours?
