Day 71 Kenora to Nestor Falls

PIctures Itinerary JDRF

We had breakfast at Timmies and were underway late. Traffic very light as we made our way onto the 17 and then 71 south towards Sioux Narrows. People had warned us of the hills, but we made splendid progress to 25km where we had our first stop at Rushing River General Store. Lots of clouds, but no rain. The ups and downs continued until Marge noticed that the rear tire was getting flat. Sure enough, we had a puncture to repair. Off with the bags, all in a row. Off with the trailer, and to work. The problem was soon identified and a patch applied just before it started to rain. Pump it up, on with the trailer, on with the bags, and off we went. 20m later, crash bang as the top bag descended onto the road. Damn, we had forgotten to do up the ties which keep it snugly on the rack. Do all that, and 100m later I stop to check the pressure in the tire, mmmm.
Off with the bags, off with the trailer, off with the tire, pull off the patch, say a nasty word several times, put in a new tube, pump it up, put on the bags, put on the trailer, check the bags are on, start off. 20m later my helmet crashes onto the road, fortunately without my head in it. I'd left it on top of the trailer. Stop, eat a banana to complete the exercise.
Starts to pour down, so out with the jackets. 5 minutes later it stops, leave jackets on in case. Fry inside jacket, get wet. Eat an oat meal cookie.

Finally we make Sioux Narrows, meet three guys from Winnipeg, on tour. Ed, Tony and Ken.
Eat and decide to do 30 extra km to Nestor Falls and save a day. (It turned out to be close to 50km)
Only a short way on the map translates to 2 hours on the bike. Get there at 18:30 h and drop into Monique's Log Cabin for supper.
We arrive at the motel, at 20h .
All in a very good ride, the scenary is lovely and the hills not too bad after 5000km on the legs.
The road is not as dangerous as has been reported with a shoulder most of the way. And we found Internet.
Average 19,8kph
Climb 950m up, 945m down
Today's Distance 120km
Total Distance 5099km
That's all the news that's fit to blog Night, night.

  1. Thanks for the laugh:-). No, really I'm sorry about today's travails and tribulations, honest. The 2 of you must be zonked out not to notice Ron's helmet not on his head. You seem in good spirits in spite of everything and that makes me happy.
Read a great Alan Aykbourne play last evening, The Norman Conquests, At times we had trouble keeping going as we were all laughing so much.
Keep those wheels spinnning and keep safe.
    Love and hugs

  2. Hi Annie, Thanks for the comment, Yes we were a bit zonked, but got over it about 8am this morning.
(My mum always said I would forget my head one day, but I thought she was exaggerating.)
