Day 69 Winnipeg to Rennie

Pictures Itinerary JDRF

Time for pictures, then on the road through a deserted Winnipeg. It was cool, cloudy and threatening rain as our little group threaded its way downtown, Neil, Linda and Bob. We said our farewells at 10km and negotiated 5km through roadworks up to the Ringway. Over the Red River Spillway and into the country, the rain held off and the wind helped us. Marge was still not feeling 100% and was not eating much, so we decided to just take it easy and see how far we could get. At 33km there was a loud bang from the rear tire, the expected had happened, the cheap tire we had picked up in Waterton had had enough. On with one of the new ones purchased in Winnipeg, and away to Anola for second breakfast. There was a lot of traffic coming towards us, not much on our side, and we saw just one truck all day. The shoulder is intermittent; it was always capable of being ridden in an emergency.

We arrived at Elma without incident and had lunch (93km)

and decided to push on to Rennie. As we were eating, a very heavy shower came through, the only rain we saw all day.

Riding into the wind wasn’t so bad, as we were protected by trees, and we saw the first outcroppings of granite of the Canadian Shield. We arrived in Rennie about 5:15pm, booked into the Rennie Hotel, and took a nap for an hour. Then down to the Bar for some Fort Garry ales, poutine, perogies and a couple of hours chat with Laurence, aka Ooster Metlapp, a local character with a fine sense of humour.

Breakfast opens at 8am.

Average 21.5kph,

Height Climbed 125m,

Today’s distance 129km,

Total Distance 4883km

I think that’s all the news that’s fit to blog for today. Marge did a great job under the circumstances, let’s hope her appetite comes back tomorrow in Kenora.

  1. Hi Ron and Marge

Marge, hope your feeling better, I know I am!! Sorry I wasn't feeling good enough to join you for the departure ride. The first time I got on the bike was today, Patti and I rode to the Forks for breakfast. Oh, by the way Len's wife is Sandra, Patti is mine, hard to keep all the new people strait I know.
Sounds like the new tires came just in time! The area around Rennie to the Ontario boarder is beautiful country, I always loved working that area, hope you enjoy it.
We sure had a great time while you were here and have really enjoyed your company. It's neet that your tc trip has reminded me and Neil of ours in so many ways.
Have a great trip, be safe and keep in touch.
