Day 44 - Creston to Cranbrook

We were a bit tired today. Yesterday’s efforts on the Kootenay Pass have left their mark on us and it took us a long time to get warmed up. About 90km actually, but that’s cutting the story a bit short. There were no major climbs today, but there were lots of minor bumps to get over, and miles of road where you keep thinking that there must be a brake on, or something. We even had to pedal the down-hills, or it seemed.

We stopped for rests and ate and chatted and, well we did everything we normally do but for the first 90km all I did was keep looking at the odometer wondering why the number was going up so slowly. At about 75km as we were at the side of the beautiful Moyie Lake watching a rain storm approach, and it wasn’t long before it started to rain in earnest. We kitted up, and as it was not cold, riding in the rain wasn’t such a bad experience, except every now and then a big truck would pass and shower us with spray. THEN, about 2pm, breakfast kicked in (bacon eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast). The last few kilometers just flew past as we finally could get on top of a gear, and we were tooling along almost 15kph faster. I really don’t know how, but suddenly it was fun again, and we finished very strong.

Into a motel once more, (yes we are fair weather campers) and bought some fresh wild Atlantic Salmon, new potatoes and peas. Chocolate milk has become the beverage of choice these days to ensure we keep up our calcium intake, that’s what I tell folks, but between you and us. We just love it.

Statistics for the day: first time over 3000km in one ride, we crossed a time zone, only 2 hours between here and MTL. A big public thanks to Andrew for his work on the blog. I edited for one day and it took me ages, and thanks again for him bringing me a new altimeter so I don’t have to keep estimating total altitude. That’s all the news that’s fit to print. It’s still raining Night night.

  1. Glad to hear it's still fun. Congratulations on the 3000km mark! Hope the weather dries up for you, but not too much heat.
    Keep safe
